Elite Traveler has revealed its annual list of the 100 best restaurants in the world, as voted for by its readers, with Chicago's Alinea returning to the top spot, having taken the title in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
Last
year's number one, Azurmendi, which is located just outside Bilbao and like
Alinea, holds three Michelin stars, drops to number two, while Eleven Madison
Park and Per Se, both in New York, and Massimo Bottura's Osteria Francescana in
Modena, Italy, come in at third, fourth and fifth respectively. El Celler de
Can Roca, third last year, drops down to 11.
The
most succesful nation on the list is the US, with 23 restaurants, followed by
France with 18. Spain has eight restaurants, while the UK and Italy are joint fourth
with seven. New York also overtakes Paris for the first time as readers'
favourite city, with 13 restaurants compared to 10 for Paris. Perhaps
controversially there are only four restaurants from Japan, the same as from
Australia.
Chef
of the Year is Eric Ripert of New York's Le Bernardin, while John B Shields of Chicago's
Smyth and The Loyalist is Rising Star of the Year. Daniel Boulud picks up the
Lifetime Achievement Award.
